Finding a handle that is yours and yours alone

Every good single-word username on a popular platform was claimed years ago. The trick to landing something available and memorable is to combine elements - a descriptive word, a theme and perhaps a number - into a handle that feels deliberate rather than like a string the system assigned after your first choice was taken.

Aim for consistency

If you can, grab the same handle across the platforms you care about - gaming, social media, a code-hosting account. A consistent name makes you recognisable and easier for friends, followers or collaborators to find, and it stops someone else from impersonating you under the obvious variant of your name.

Do not hand over your personal data

A username is public, so keep personal details out of it. Avoid your full real name, your birth year, your street or your school - strung together these are exactly the breadcrumbs used to guess security questions or simply to work out who and where you are. A generated, abstract handle gives you a clean separation between your online identity and your private life.

Make it easy to share

The best handles survive being said out loud. Go easy on heavy leetspeak and ambiguous characters - a name full of zeros, ones and underscores is a nightmare to dictate to a teammate over voice chat. Aim for something distinctive but spellable, then use it everywhere.
