Placeholder text, and why it is gibberish on purpose

Lorem Ipsum is the scrambled, meaningless Latin that fills layouts before the real copy is ready. It begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and has been the printing and typesetting industry's standard dummy text since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage from Cicero's writings to make a type specimen book.

Why not just type "test test test"?

The point of placeholder text is to let everyone judge the layout, typography and spacing without being distracted by the meaning of the words. Real sentences pull a reviewer into reading and critiquing the content; a block of repeated "test" looks unnatural and collapses into an obvious pattern. Lorem Ipsum sits in the sweet spot - it has a natural-looking distribution of word and sentence lengths, so a paragraph of it occupies space much like genuine prose will.

Using it well

• Generate roughly the amount of text the final content will need, so the layout is tested honestly.
• Vary between words, sentences and paragraphs depending on whether you are filling a label, a caption or an article body.
• If your design must support a language with very long words or right-to-left script, test with placeholder text that reflects that, not just Latin.

One rule above all

Never let Lorem Ipsum reach production. Every developer eventually finds a "lorem ipsum" sitting live on a client's homepage. Treat it as a visible reminder that real content is still outstanding, and strip it out before launch.
